The Flying Grysyns

I was originally going to flesh this out over a number of posts, including all the back story I have lined up, but oh well no time for that.

Focusing on my display base, I used some careful masking to spray some base colours to the model and then did some silver and copper dry brushing over the top of a couple of transfers (imperial eagle and numbers on the tank top) and the black Roman numeral printout that I glued on the back side.

I printed out a bunch of mini posters but I decided not to use them. I'm sure that they will come in handy in the future.

First off a few closeups of the team...

And now the team on the base. Turns out I couldn't quite find a space for the sniper dude. Oh well I've now got a sniper dude for some other project ready to go!

Overall I'm pretty happy how the things turned out.

Upping my Game

So. Happy New Year.

So while I was developing my Grysyn project I decided that I wanted to make a display plinth of some sort.

I started out with some random boxes to build up some sort of idea of what the display will look like..

Thinking about it I was full of flu at the time so the boxes aren't really that random after all.

I bought some pre-cut 3mm thick mdf from ebay, cut some holes to make the bases appear flush and then started messing around with some hirst arts casts I had around..

I mainly used pipes to conjure up an industrial feeling then added some corner pieces for a bit of variety.

I then covered all exposed areas with various textured material. I used the wallpaper stuff that I use for many of my bases and some steel patterned plasticard. I also used some (wanting for a better description) stripy textured plasticard for the walls.

There is the final mock up with the team in place.

The Main Man

Finally the ringmaster....

Another ogre dude, but with a top hat..

I thought I would show some WIP in progress because I am quite pleased with the result.

I used some strips of plasticard to form the outline of the coat, then filled out the gaps with greenstuff to make it more overcoaty.

The gun is from the ork warlord kit. I know, the barrels need drilling.

Really like this guy! Well apart from the top hat, which hasn't quite turned out the way I thought.

Cousin Sniper Dude

I built this sniper dude using parts from the ogre kingdoms range..

I really like the way he turned out and I think that he makes a better ratling sniper type than those dwarf based models that I made a while back. Oh well. Ho hum.

Grumpy Grandad

Next up for the Gryson family we have a wizened preacher type...

The only change that I made was to build some sort of reliquary type thing onto the end of the staff. I guess he could double up as either a psycher or preacher.

Big Sis

Dick Grayson has a big sis. In this merry band she is some sort of psycher type. and is represented by a fig from hasslefree miniatures..

I didn't add anything else to this model. Don't think it needs it!

A Theme Emerges

So I built the assassin dudes. Awesome. But then I was kind of stuck for a theme that would tie the collection of miscreants together. I was proper stuck, but then it hit me..

THE FLYING GRAYSONS

But I need to change the name slightly, so they became the Grysyns... Much more 40kish!

Yup, I'm sure it has been done before, but it hasn't by me, so I thought that I would use this as the theme. I guess the most important element would be Dick Grayson himself. I checked out various models on offer, and perhaps unsurprisingly, there were not that many 10 or 11 year old child models available.

Anyway, I found this guy from the Malifaux range, added some bits, and boom, future nightwing is born...

All I did was swap out the spear head for something more dark elar-y, along with the shoulder pad. I added a book on his back and then sculpted a book holster tpye thing from greenstuff.

More Deathcult Assassins

Another dude with a pair of swords...

The torso is from one of those ogre kingdom goblin types and the right arm is from a necromunda ganger. Quite like this guy!

Another Change of Direction

So I was merrily cracking on with my chaos bits when I was struck by some inspiration with what to do with some dark eldar bits I bought off ebay a while back

So as part of my inquisition project, which has been fermenting in the back of my mind for quite some now, I present the first of my henchmen, and the first death cult assassin...

The torso is from some celtic barbarian type from some mode range that I cannot recall. Again from ebay, A couple of power swords from some grey nights and boom. Doneskie.

Vindicare

So this guy has not been promoted to my favourite assassin. I have used him the battle report that I posted earlier and he underperformed a bit, so I'm basing this on looks and overall satisfaction. The brown and blue were adapted from the Culexis, but I think the green worked really well.

Here is my previous post.

It would be right about here that I would add a team assassin photo but I never took one. Naughty me.

Culexis

Moderately happy with this guy The blue and browns work quite well, but I think he looks the least 'assassiny' of my merry group of murderous nut jobs. I think that I may do a version 2 of this guy in the future.

Here is the previous article on him.

Eversor

Previously I thought that this was my favourite of my assassins, but now he has fallen out of favour slightly for some reason. I think that his gun is making him look far too unbalanced. I may opt for corrective surgery later, but I'll leave it for now.

Callidus

Yup, Started on the assassins with my Callidus / Death Cult interpretation. I'm totally hammering the painting things black at the moment. The commander, both commissars and now this gal use the same black with purple highlights. Looks good!

Although to be honest I am now sick of painting black using this particular technique. I chose the pink hair to give it a bit of an anime-esque spin

The original article on the assassin is here.
